Tuesday, May 7, 2013 Turn in Signed Progress Report JOURNAL Describe 1-2 times you’ve had to convince someone of something (convince parents to let you hang out with friends, a friend to let you use something, etc)? How did you convince them?

Share Journals with Desk Partner

Persuasive Vocab Fact – something that has actually happened or is really true.

Persuasive Vocab Opinion – a person’s own view or attitude about something

Persuasive Vocab Persuasive Essay – the writer builds an argument and supports opinions with a variety of evidence, such as facts, statistics, examples, and statements from experts

For Example…Cats vs. Dogs
Fact: Dogs have lived with humans for over 14,000 years. Cats have lived with people for only 7,000 years. Statistic: While 3 out of 4 adults (74%) said they like dogs a lot, only 2 out of 5 respondents (41%) said they like cats a lot. Example: There was a serious fire in 2007 and a dog managed to pull its owner out to safety. Statements from Experts: As Fordham University English professor and author Mary Bly put it, "Dogs come when they're called; cats take a message and get back to you."

Persuasive Vocab Qualifier – words that make an opinion easier to support. Examples: almost, some, usually, in most cases NOT: all, best, worst  difficult to support.

For Example…Michigan Weather
Bad: In Michigan it ALWAYS snows in April! (But what about that one time it doesn’t?) Instead… Good use of Qualifier: In Michigan is often snows in April. (Much easier to support!)

Persuasive Vocab Source – a person, book, etc. that provides information

Persuasive Vocab Thesis Statement - the arguable point of the essay that summarizes main point; unifying Usually one sentence, identifies the subject, takes a stand (author’s perspective) It’s the MORTAR that holds the essay together.

For Example… High school is more difficult than middle school because there is more homework, greater expectations, and longer lines. Being a teenager is a challenge at times because you donʼt always get along with your parents, you have to go to school, and you have to listen to teachers. Toby Mac is my favorite rapper because he is a great rapper, has cool style, and is an all-around cool guy.

Persuasive Vocab Transition – Words that help tie ideas together and move the reader through the text. Examples: of course, however, unless, consequently

For Example… AS A RESULT
The principal added additional detention time for students caught littering the school grounds; _______________, the campus became much cleaner almost overnight. HOWEVER AS A RESULT C. FOR EXAMPLE D. OR AS A RESULT

Persuasive Vocab Voice – An element of style which projects the writer’s personality through word choice, text structure, and tone. Lets you get to know the person behind the writing. Doesn’t sound like a ROBOT Writer seems interested in topic

Persuasive Vocab Quick-Write Evidence – An impromptu, unpolished writing in which a writer responds to a stimulus. Think Daily Journal prompts
