2 A View of the Cell

3 What Living Things Are Made Of....
Viruses DISORDERS DNA Cells Bacteria DISEASE How Living Things Work...

4 Robert Hooke English Scientist “The Cork Cell Expert”
I’m the first in my field to locate and name cells using a microscope !!

5 1. The cell is the basic unit of organization.
The Cell Theory (Schleiden, Schwann, Leeuwenhoek, Virchow) 1. The cell is the basic unit of organization. 2. All organisms are composed of one or more cells. 3. All cells come from pre-existing cells

6 Vacuole storage of materials and wastes
Animal Cell Smooth ER chemical synthesis, especially lipids and some transportation Mitochondria powerhouse of the cell, energy (ATP) is made Vacuole storage of materials and wastes Golgi Apparatus packages proteins and sends them out to other parts of the cell Lysosomes secrete enzymes for digestion Nucleolus makes ribosomes Nucleus control center, contains chromatin (DNA) Centrioles aid in cell reproduction Cytoskeleton composed of microtubles & microfilaments, framework for the cell Cell Membrane semipermeable, regulates what moves in and out of the cell. Cytoplasm watery environment, supports organelles Ribosomes help make proteins Rough ER same as smooth but has ribosomes on it

7 Plant Cells Golgi Apparatus Cell Wall protection, support, composed of cellulose in plants, chitin in fungi ER (smooth & rough) Nucleus Nucleolus Ribosomes NO CENTRIOLES !! Chloroplast contains the pigment chlorophyll to assist in photosynthesis Lysosomes Mitochondria Vacuole Cytoplasm Cell Membrane Cytoskeleton

8 Cilia or Flagellum ? Hair-like structures Whip-like tail(s)

9 Animal vs. Plant Centrioles No centrioles Large vacuoles Small vacuoles Chloroplasts No chloroplasts No cell wall Cell wall

10 Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes
No membrane –bound organelles Membrane – bound organelles No true nucleus True nucleus Archaebacteria and Eubacteria Protists, Fungi, Plants, and Animals
