2 Colonial Governments – Page 97 #1-2 all
1 A. Colonial governments were organized in different ways. All of them had a governor. The governor was usually chosen by the king or by representatives of the people. A group of advisors to the king (Privy Council) set the policies for the colonies. Within the colonies, the people could choose representatives or have town meetings to make local laws. The colonies also had colonial courts. Colonial courts enforced local laws and protected individual freedoms. 1B. Political change in England affected colonial governments by changing the amount of power they had. When King James II became king he limited their power. Then Parliament (government of England) replaced King James II and passed the English Bill of Rights. This document limited/reduced/decrease the power of the king/queen. Made them less powerful. 2A. Mercantilism is a system of creating and maintaining wealth by carefully controlling trade . For example, if Spain wanted to become richer, it could tell its colonies to only trade with Spain. It would not let them trade with other countries so that all the money from its colonies would go to Spain. 2B. The Navigation Acts supported mercantilism because the English could limit what was traded by their American colonies. 2C. The colonies benefited from mercantilism because they always had England as a trade partner. England was wealthy and powerful and the colonists were able to become wealthy from trade with England.
