2 At the end of the Gilded Age
Poor living conditions for the economically disadvantaged. Big business monopolies of markets – rich are very rich But jobs and increasing national wealth has also led to a growing middle class. With inventions and innovations, people have more time – leisure The country is more connected – rail road and media Consumerism is leading to mass culture Laissez-faire (do nothing – hands off) government is becoming challenged.

3 The Progressive Age A time of reforms – there was drive to improve the lives of the masses, especially the urban poor Came from the middle class Journalists and media played an important role Religion played a major role Theodore Roosevelt changes government’s laissez-faire attitude Major Target Areas: Education, Alcoholism, Work conditions, urban poor, living conditions, break up of bad monopolies and corruption, political reforms that gave more power to the people
