Paper 1 – short answer questions Paper 2 – Spelling English Reading (1 Paper) Mathematics Paper 1 – Arithmetic Paper 2 – Reasoning Paper 3 – Reasoning

3 The 2019 Test Timetable The tests must be taken on the scheduled day if the child is in school. If a child is unwell on the day of the test and cannot attend school, they will be able to take the test up to 5 school days after the scheduled date. Monday 13th May Tuesday 14th May Wednesday 15th May Thursday 16th May English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 1 – short answer questions Paper 2 - Spelling English reading test Mathematics Paper 1 – arithmetic test Paper 2 - reasoning Mathematics Paper 3 - reasoning

4 Scaled Scores All raw scores (the amount of actual marks awarded) are converted into scaled scores using a conversion table. KS2 test outcomes no longer use levels and will be reported as scaled scores. A scaled score of 100 will represent the expected standard (of the test). There are no thresholds set for working below or exceeding standards.

5 Results Test results will be published on Tuesday 9th July.
Each pupil registered for the tests will receive: a raw score (the number of marks awarded) a scaled score confirmation of whether or not they met the ‘expected standard’ Conversion tables for the 2019 tests will also be published on GOV.UK on Tuesday 9th July so schools can understand how pupils’ scaled scores are derived from their raw scores.

6 Teacher Assessments As well as SATs, the judgements from teacher assessments are reported for the core subjects of English reading, English writing, mathematics and science. The aim of the teacher assessment is to make a rounded judgement that: Is based on knowledge of how the child has performed over time and across a range of contexts; Is based on a broad range of evidence from across the curriculum; Takes into account strengths and weaknesses of a child’s performance. Teacher assessments will be made by the end of June.

Short answer questions 45 minutes to complete Spelling test: 20 missing words within contextualised sentences 20 marks 15 minutes but not strictly timed

8 GPS – how to help Learning words in context – previously children were asked to write the word ‘point’ as a verb and noun; Expose children to lots of language – in a previous years spelling they were tested on was the word ‘coarse’ (The jumper was very coarse); Spellings tested from across KS2 curriculum (see the statutory lists for all year groups); Capital letters and apostrophes must be placed separately.

50 marks in total 3 texts to read of different genres Texts increase in difficulty Greater emphasis on comprehension elements Format – 1 reading booklet containing texts and 1 separate answer booklet 1 hour to read 3 texts and complete questions at their own pace

10 Reading – how to help Discuss new words that you come across and their meanings; Encourage extended reading as regularly as possible; Discuss, empathise and identify with characters; Identify central issues in a text and justify their opinions using evidence from the text; Discuss features and layout of different types of text; Link discussion to the effect the writing has on the reader.

11 KS2 Mathematics test Paper 1 Arithmetic – Basic mathematical calculations 30 minutes Approx. 36 questions worth 40 marks Straightforward +, –, x and ÷ (1 mark) More complex calculations with fractions, decimals and percentages (1 mark) Long divisions and long multiplications (2 marks) Paper 2 and 3 Reasoning 40 minutes for each paper 35 marks on each paper Some questions require working out to be shown All equipment will be provided (NO calculators)

12 Mathematics – how to help
Revise basic number skills regularly (place value, addition/subtraction…) Become secure in formal methods for all 4 operations; Identify and use decimals, fractions and percentages in every day life; Continue practicing and recalling all times tables.

13 How to Help – CGP Books CGP Books are up to date and in line with the current curriculum; Revise previous and new learning ready for the tests; Include SATs style questions; Allow children some independence in revision; Can be brought to an adult at any time for extra discussion/recap on a subject.

14 Extra help in tests Provision can be made to enable all children to achieve their best without disadvantage. This is known as ‘access arrangements’. Some children may have: A reader ( for any test except the reading test) A prompter A scribe Extra time “Brain breaks” Children who need questions read to them will be assigned a reader and/or a scribe depending on their needs. If a child’s writing is hard to read, work (or parts of it) will be transcribed. These arrangements are based on the children’s individual needs and current provision.

15 Our children We want all children in our care to do their personal best and we will support them in doing this throughout year 6. This looks different for all children and we celebrate success for all. Whilst encouraging the children to work hard and do their best we aim to maintain a balance and a healthy view of SATs and we endeavour not to put unnecessary pressure on the young people in our school. During circle time and PSHE sessions, we will be helping children to cope with any worries or anxieties they may have.

16 Helping during the build up
Emphasise to your child that the tests are an opportunity to ‘show off’ everything they have learnt and what matters is trying one’s best on the day. Talk through any worries or concerns your child may have and reassure them. Encourage them to complete their revision homework and use the CPG books we provide. Ensure a good amount of sleep in the run-up to, and during, SAT’s week. Provide a nutritious breakfast or come and have this in school at our SATs Breakfast Club from 8:30am! Please inform the school as soon as possible if there are any problems (e.g. health or transport issues), so that we can do our best to help.

17 SATs are not the end of Y6 Your child will continue to learn, have fun and prepare for starting Secondary School.
