CILIPS Autumn Gathering 2013 Inspiration and Education School Library Advocacy

CILIPS school library advocacy task and finish group The brief Update on the work so far Next steps

The Scottish landscape Headlines from the audit of school library services and school librarians in Scotland

The importance of school library advocacy The Edinburgh experience - School Library situation in 2010. Efficiencies suggested sessionalisation of all support staff in schools. What did we do? Every librarian wrote an impact statement, they gathered support from colleagues, they worked together to produce a DVD which linked their work to the Curriculum for Excellence. They gave this to Central school management and councillors. They also spoke to parent councils.

The importance of school library advocacy - What happened centrally? I wrote a paper about what a school librarian does and what the impact would be of sessionalisation for be on learning for Secondary Head Teachers. I also wrote a paper on the impact on the ability of librarians to work collegiately. All this hard work paid off. - We have had 3 years of a policy of appointing 1 FTE qualified school librarian per High School and the line was held even if individual HTs queried it.

The importance of school library advocacy 2013 – Jump forward and we have just had a proposal for a review of secondary librarians, to include looking at sharing librarians between schools. School Librarians can never let enough people know the positive impact that they are having on learning and literacy. This is what today is about everyone must disseminate what they do within the school and beyond.

The importance of school library advocacy – what can you do? Could your Senior Managers say what is happening in the library and how it links to the Curriculum? Do you parents know the role that the librarian plays in supporting learning? Are you taking the time after amazing events to let as wide a group of people know about it? Advocacy is the most important aspect of your work that you can do at the moment.

Lets discuss! There is a question for each group to discuss. Someone from the advocacy group will be at each table to facilitate the discussion. Please record the discussion on the flip chart. At the signal, move round in a clockwise direction.

Wish you were here! Now write yourself a postcard: I will ….
