1 TG3 17TR8 Liaison Report ASME Task Group on Subsea Applications
API SC6 Meeting TG3 17TR8 Liaison Report ASME Task Group on Subsea Applications API SC6 – February 3, 2016

2 High-Pressure High-Temperature Design Guidelines, API TR: 17TR8
First Edition Published February 2015 Continued improvements and edits are being made to improve the first edition that came out last year. Eight work / study groups exist and have been meeting.

3 High-Pressure High-Temperature Design Guidelines, API TR: 17TR8
Design Analysis – looking at load bearing analysis cases, load allowables, bolting stresses, and Elastic-Plastic (EP) and Elastic Perfectly-Plastic (EPP) analysis methods. Materials – looking at test procedures and results, welding and clad testing, and NDE and flaw sizing. Material Characterization – working on testing requirements. ASME Task Group on Subsea Design – working with ASME, looking at LRFD for rare events, and other API / ASME items. Design Validation – focusing on clear definition of PR2 to PR4 requirements with respect to FMECA and failure modes.

4 High-Pressure High-Temperature Design Guidelines, API TR: 17TR8
Fatigue Input Parameters – organizing list of typical fatigue input parameters. Extreme and Survival Definitions – expanded definitions of extreme and survival events. Including functional requirements. New, lower design margins / factors for these events. Monitoring DEEPSTAR validation study and two flange sizes for analysis and testing.

5 ASME Task Group on Subsea Applications
The ASME TG is responsible for reviewing and evaluating the need for modifications to the Section VIII, Division 3 Code for improved suitability to Subsea Applications and to address the concerns of the stakeholders in this area. Group was formed to focus on clarification of ASME rules based on issues brought to light relative to designers referencing them for subsea applications. It is recognized that the equipment is not intended to be ASME stamped equipment. A number of items are being investigated with the goal of either providing clarification or proposed edits to Div. 3. Meeting regularly; ideally, this effort is significantly progressed (~done) in by mid-2016.

6 Selected TG Items Review definition of extreme & survival loading and relate to occasional & abnormal from Div. 3. Also, relate to LRFD risk. Review stress allowables in bolting between API and ASME. Review definitions of loads including subsea’s external pressure, upset, etc. in Section VIII Div. 2 and 3. Consideration of material performance in subsea applications and possibly modifying KD-10 in Div. 3 (hydrogen service). Review QA/QC requirements for materials in ASME vs. API. Consider concerns regarding the local strain limits (triaxiality). Evaluate best approach to fatigue of clad bodies.
