2 Instructions Your cooperative learning group will be assigned a section of the text to read as a group. You are to complete SPAWN to better understand the problems and effects of American Imperialism. Your group will have the following roles 1. Reader: Responsible for reading the text out loud to the group 2. Recorder you will have a recorder that will chart your responses for SPAWN 3. Time Keeper is to ensure that your group stays on task and works with in the time frame given. 4. Group Leader is to ensure that everyone understands the instructions , checks all work for accuracy and is in charge of asking for assistance for the group.

3 Time Your group has 10 minutes to read, you should not be working on anything else. Your group has 5 minutes to complete questions 1 and 2. Your group has 5 minutes to answer questions 3 and 4. Your group has 10 minutes to answer questions 5-11 Your group has 5 minutes to answer questions 12-14 Your group has 5 minutes to answer questions 15-16

5 P: Problem Solving What is one problem that is discussed or inferred in the reading? How would you have solved this problem differently?

6 A: Alternate Viewpoints - You are a journalist traveling around during this time period
What kinds of things are you seeing? What are positive things being said about the person or situation that was discussed in the text? Who is saying the positive things? What are negative things being said about the person or situation that was discussed in the text? Who is saying the negative things? What are some differences between the positive and negative things people are saying? What are some similarities between the positive and negative things people are saying?

7 W: What if… What if _____________ (list a person) had done ________ (list an event) during this time period. How might history have been different if this happened? How do these actions differ from that of __________________?

8 N: Next…You are a person living with your family during this time
N: Next…You are a person living with your family during this time. You and your family have been impacted by the person and/or event that you read about. How did this impact your family? What will you do next?
