Objectives Define hazing and explain why it is a form of bullying. Describe consequences of hazing. Explain ways to prevent or stop hazing. Do Now In your Student Journal write a few sentences about a group you belong to or would like to be part of. Explain what the group is, why you like belonging to the group or want to belong to the group, and what it was like when you joined or what you imagine it will be like when you join the group. You can belong to a family, groups of friends, teams, clubs or organizations. Belonging in school is a good thing when you know that you have friends who make you feel safe and comfortable. Sometimes in high school and college, people may try to make you do things you don’t want to do in order to belong. This can become uncomfortable or dangerous. Hazing is a type of bullying. Hazing is any humiliating or dangerous activity expected in order to join a group. When people haze, they exert power or influence over others. New members may hope to prove themselves or be afraid of rejection if they refuse to take part in hazing. The current group members may have been hazed themselves when they joined the group. They may accept the hazing as the price of membership, or be afraid that speaking up will put their own position in the group at risk. As you read the story, think about whether the activities described fit the definition of hazing, and how the person in the story felt about what he or she had to do. They were humiliated and in some cases were put into dangerous or illegal situations in order to become a member of a group. Mark wasn’t hazed. He was not humiliated and he was safe. He felt good about participating in the rock-climbing activity. Laws were broken when Ramon’s team made a freshman drink beer. If Marina and her friend had been hurt as a result of being left outside of town, there could have been legal consequences. If you were a bystander in these situations, you could leave the situation and get help from an adult. Consequences of hazing can include people getting hurt physically and emotionally. Targets of hazing may feel scared, angry, helpless or depressed. They may be injured during the hazing. Groups that haze can get in trouble with the law if the hazing is illegal. Some group members may feel bad about the hazing or feel scared about what will happen if they don’t go along with it. They may feel guilty or upset.
