1 “My name is Bond, Ionic Bond; taken, not shared!”
Ionic Bonding Ms. Cook Mrs. Clark-Grubb And Mrs. Mansberger “My name is Bond, Ionic Bond; taken, not shared!”

2 Ionic Bonding Ionic Bonding: Force of attraction between oppositely charged ions. A positively charged metal ion gives electrons to a negatively charged nonmetal ion.

3 Octet Rule When forming compounds, atoms tend to lose or gain electrons to have an electron configuration of a noble gas. Noble gases have 8 valence electrons in their outermost energy level.

4 Formation of Cations Metals tend to lose electrons to have an octet.
When this happens they have more protons than electrons & the atom has a positive charge. Example: A sodium atom has 11 protons(+) & 11 electrons(-) which cancel out to make the atom neutral. It loses it’s 1 valence electron to be like Neon. It still has11 protons (+) but now only has 10 electrons (-) meaning it has 1 more proton (+). Na will have a positive charge Na+1

5 Naming Cations Ca+2 H+ calcium hydrogen K+ Na+ sodium potassium
To name the metal cation, just look it up on the periodic table or common ion table H+ Ca+2 hydrogen calcium Na+ K+ sodium potassium

6 How many protons does an atom of magnesium contain?
12

7 How many electrons does an atom of magnesium contain?
12

8 Which noble gas will a magnesium atom resemble in stability when it loses electrons?
neon

9 How many electrons will a magnesium atom most likely lose?

10 What charge will a magnesium ion have?
B 2+ C 1- D 2- Answer: B

11 Formation of Anions Nonmetals tend to gain electrons to have an octet.
When this happens they have more electrons than protons & the atom has a negative charge. Example: An oxygen atom has 8 protons(+) and 8 electrons(-) which cancel out to make the atom neutral. It gains 2 valence electrons to be like Neon. It still has 8 protons(+) but now has 10 electrons(-) meaning it has 2 more electrons(-). O will have a negative charge O2-

12 Naming Anions To name the nonmetal anion remove the end of the element name and replace it with “ide” N3- nitrogen nitride P3- phosphorus phosphide arsenic As3- arsenide
