1 William Wordsworth was born in Cumbria in 1770
William Wordsworth was born in Cumbria in His parents died when he was young, but he was to spend his childhood finding solace in the rustic society in which he grew up. He lives close to the mountains of Cumberland and alongside the River Derwent. He would go on to call his childhood a pure communion with nature. William moved to France in the early 1790s (whilst the Revolution was being fought) and found himself sympathetic to the revolutionaries. The bloodshed of the revolution saw William become a philosophical figure. As a philosopher, Wordsworth believed that in being born, humans move from a perfect, idealised realm in to the imperfect, un-ideal earth. As children, we still have some memory of the former purity in which we lived, best perceived in the relationship between children and nature. Wordsworth was one of the founding members of the Romantic movement, so his passion for nature and the freedom of the human spirit are evident in his poetry,.
