1 Comparison of Wind Speed and Wind Stress to Ocean Ambient Sound
LT Paul Cocker

2 High-Frequency Acoustic Recording Package (HARP)
Up to 200kHz sampling rate 1.92 TB of data per instrument deployment 55 days of continuous sampling at 200kHz About 1 year of continuous sampling at 30kHz

3

4 HARP Deployment 2 25 JAN to 04 June 2007
5 minutes of sampling at 200kHz; 10 minutes off Data stored in 75 second segments Data down-sampled to 20kHz One week (9-15) of each month selected for analysis

6 Wind Speeds obtained from buoys 46042 and 46028

7

8 Wind Stress τ = ρcpU2 ρ = air density cp = drag coefficient
U = wind speed Wind stress is the vertical transfer of horizontal momentum

14 Is one better than the other?

15 Not Statistically Significant

17 Conclusions Wind Stress may be a better indicator of the changes in ambient noise, but sample size was too small For mid-range frequencies, the relationship between ambient noise and wind stress is linear above .05 N/m2

18 Future Work Increase sample size by shifting from weeks to days
Characterize the relationship between ocean ambient noise and wind stress over a broader range of frequencies. Hydrophone sensitivity needs to be better quantified.
