1 Comparing Mitosis and Meiosis
CELL CYCLE Comparing Mitosis and Meiosis

2 Similarities Both are forms of cell division
Both involve similar steps—prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase Both involve chromosome replication Both are followed by cytokinesis

3 Differences Meiosis reduces the number of chromosomes in the daughter cells by half while mitosis maintains the same number of chromosomes Meiosis creates daughter cells that are unique while mitosis creates daughter cells that are genetically identical Meiosis results in 4 cells while mitosis results in only 2 cells Meiosis occurs in the reproductive organs to produce sex cells while mitosis occurs in the other body organs to produce somatic cells

4 Variation Variation is defined as the differences between members of a population Occurs during meiosis by the random separation of homologous chromosomes Occurs during fertilization by the random combination of haploid gametes

5 Variation Variation is the key to survival!
If an environmental change occurs, a genetically diverse population has a better chance of survival

6 Comparison of Divisions
Mitosis Meiosis Number of divisions 1 2 Number of daughter cells 4 Genetically identical? Yes No Chromosome # Same as parent Half of parent Where Somatic cells Germ (sex) cells When Throughout life At sexual maturity Role Growth and repair Sexual reproduction
