1 A Foot Stomping, Back Slapping, Good Time
Romans 16:1-23 A Foot Stomping, Back Slapping, Good Time

2 Romans 16:1-23 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea; that you receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and that you help her in whatever matter she may have need of you; for she herself has also been a helper of many, and of myself as well. Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who for my life risked their own necks, to whom not only do I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles; also greet the church that is in their house. Greet Epaenetus, my beloved, who is the first convert to Christ from Asia. Greet Mary, who has worked hard for you. Greet Andronicus and Junias, my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners, who are outstanding among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me. Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord. (Romans 16:1-8)

3 Romans 16:1-23 (continued) Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and Stachys my beloved. Greet Apelles, the approved in Christ. Greet those who are of the household of Aristobulus. Greet Herodion, my kinsman. Greet those of the household of Narcissus, who are in the Lord. Greet Tryphaena and Tryphosa, workers in the Lord. Greet Persis the beloved, who has worked hard in the Lord. Greet Rufus, a choice man in the Lord, also his mother and mine. Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas and the brethren with them. Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints who are with them. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you. (Romans 16:9-16)

4 Romans 16:1-23 (continued) Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them. For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting. For the report of your obedience has reached to all; therefore I am rejoicing over you, but I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you. Timothy my fellow worker greets you, and so do Lucius and Jason and Sosipater, my kinsmen. I, Tertius, who write this letter, greet you in the Lord. Gaius, host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer greets you, and Quartus, the brother. (Romans 16:17-23)

8 Some Serious Greeting Going On
Lots of people from other passages are mentioned – see supplemental handout for relationships We’re going to focus on the qualities written about them for the sake of time I will not be kissing any one

9 The Attributes A servant of the church A helper
Fellow workers in Christ Risked their lives Hosted a church First convert to Christ in Asia Worked hard for you Kinsmen and fellow prisoners Esteemed by the apostles Beloved Approved in Christ Worked Hard In the Lord A choice man in the Lord

10 It would seem a deaconess
A servant of the church It would seem a deaconess

11 A helper

12 Fellow workers in Christ
Workers: Co-toilers, co-laborers

13 Risked their necks Literally throats

14 Hosted a church

15 First convert to Christ in Asia

16 To work to the point of being fatigued
Worked hard for you To work to the point of being fatigued

17 Kinsmen and fellow prisoners
Relatives and co-captives

18 Esteemed by the apostles
Greek: ἐπίσημος – remarkable, esteemed, notable Greek: ἐν – By, in relation to. Key to note that one translation implies apostleship, but alternative translations do not. Given that Junias is usually a feminine name its most likely that these two are esteemed

19 They were loved by PAUL the Apostle
Beloved They were loved by PAUL the Apostle

20 Approved in Christ Acceptable, tried

21 A choice man in the Lord Choice = elected

22 A Holy Kiss The Greek for a Holy Kiss implies a personal relationship and fondness. It implies a personal intimacy that would be reflected in a friendly kiss. This is completely G-rated and lead by the Holy Spirit!

23 Keep Your Eye On… …those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them. For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting.

24 Keep Your Eye On Keep your eye would mean to take mark and to watch.
Shun them among the body (assuming that reproof has not been effective) Pearls before swine (they must be Gentiles )

25 Dissensions and Hindrance
Dissension, disunity, division. Absolutely contrasting Ephesians 4:3-6 Hindrance, the English word Scandal is derived from this Greek word. A trap, a snare.

26 Turn Away from Them The Apostles recommended behavior is to shun or turn away from these divisive people. This division is due to a spiritual attitude and condition and is not motivated by the same source that causes these people to be divisive.

27 Such Men are Slaves These men are slaves of their own appetites (see Romans 1:18-32) They’re carnal They’re fleshly They’re walking in the Old Man They’re not abiding They’re sinning They’re tempting people to be like themselves They’re hugging Adam, again

28 Smooth Talkers These men have smooth language that they use to woo the unsuspecting Since Paul warned these believers in Rome they’re not going to be unsuspecting

29 Two Throwbacks to Genesis
The believers in Rome were reportedly good, which is a testimony to their lives in Christ and the communication that the church had throughout the Mediteranian Wise in Good, Innocent in Evil (Genesis 3:5) Crush Satan’s head (Genesis 3:15) – When the believer joins Christ at the Rapture the victory over Satan will be complete. Christ’s return is imminent.
