1 Plate Tectonics and Weathering
Students will predict the outcome of a situation by analyzing their plate tectonic notes.

2 Warm Up: Define “landforms” in your own words.

3 Homework Read pages define the key terms on page 37

4 The earth’s surface The Earth has two surfaces. Water and land.
ALL of the Earth’s surface are categorized into 7 continents.

5 Below the surface Scientist believe the beneath the Earth’s surface there are 12 plates that divide the world. These plats vary in size and are always moving.

6 Why do the plates move? The energy deep within the Earth’s crust builds pressure forcing the plates to move.

7 What the world looked like 1 billion years ago.
Pangaea: the theory that the continents were all once joined together in one large land mass.

8 Two types of plates Ocean plates Land Plates

9 What happens when plates collide?
Turn and talk: What do you think happens when and if plates collide (bump into each other)?

10 Plate Tectonics CONVERGENT boundaries are where the plates move towards each other

11 On the flip side When plates collide on one end that typically means they have separated on the opposite side(s) When two plates separate lava or magma reaches the earth’s surface. This cooled magma creates landforms both under the water and above the water. This is know as DIVERGENT.

12 Plates slide When plates slide suddenly we experience earthquakes. Called a TRANSFORM

13 Weathering Weathering is the natural breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces caused by several factors. Heating and cooling over causes rocks to crack Erosion: the movement of sediment from one location to another.

14 Work Time: Complete the assigned work pieces.

15 Quick Write: How can weather cause problems?
