1 Fertilisation: copy Fertilisation is when the nucleus of the egg and sperm cell fuse together to form a zygote There are two types of fertilisation: Internal which happens inside the body as a result of sexual intercourse (birds and mammals) and external which is when the egg is fertilised outside of the body (fish)

2 Sexual & Asexual reproduction
Lesson 6

3 Lesson 6: learning intention
To learn about ASEXUAL reproduction

4 Asexual reproduction In single celled animals, cell division occurs to allow them to reproduce. Two identical cells are formed. This type of reproduction is called asexual reproduction and it involves only one parent. All offspring produced this way are genetically identical and known as clones.

5 Binary fission Single celled organisms (such as amoeba) grow by BINARY FISSION The parent cell divides into two identical daughter cells

6 Budding The new organism breaks off from the parent then continues to grow Yeast cells increase their numbers through BUDDING

7 Asexual reproduction: copy
Asexual reproduction involves only one parent and produces genetically identical offspring (clones) Bacterial cells reproduce by binary fission and yeast reproduce by budding (different types of sexual reproduction)

8 Asexual reproduction in Multicellular organisms
Multicellular organisms such as plants can reproduce sexually (with flowers) or asexually (without flowers) Plants which reproduce asexually produce structures to help them. The structures include: Runners Tubers Bulbs

9 Runners Runners (e.g. strawberry plants/spider plants) are grown, with the new plant developing at the end. Eventually it will grow its own roots and become an individual plant.

10 Tubers Tubers (e.g. potato plants) are asexual structures. The next time you see ‘eyes’ developing on your potato they are actually buds waiting to grow!

11 Bulbs Bulbs (e.g. daffodil, onion and garlic) are asexual structures which are planted. Many flowers and foods are produced this way!

12 Answer in sentences How many parents are involved in asexual reproduction? How many parents are involved in sexual reproduction? Sexual reproduction increases variation in a population- why is variation important? Give examples of organisms which use asexual reproduction
