Imperialism: The complete control of a weaker nation’s social, economic, and political life by a stronger nation.
Reconquista: The re-conquest of Spain by the Christians after centuries of Islamic domination.
conquistadors : Spanish conquerors who came to the New World in search of gold and other riches
encomienda system : A system of production in Spain’s New World possessions which granted permission to conquistadors to enslave as many people needed to work a plantation
mercantilism : The policy of building a nation's wealth by exporting more goods than it imports. Colonies supply their parent nations with raw materials that are used to produce finished goods, and then exported back to the colonies. Colonies are an exclusive market for the parent country

3. Exploration Task: Complete pages 19 and 20 in the review packet
The resurgence of trade following the Middle Ages in Europe resulted in a demand for goods from Asia.  Trade routes were established across the Mediterranean and through the Middle East to handle this need.  But, when the expansion of the Ottoman Empire caused disruption along these routes, Europeans were forced to seek alternative ways of importing these goods.  This led to the exploration of water routes to Asia, and eventually the discovery of the Americas by the Europeans
