3 Themes to keep in mind Humans acting inhumanly toward their fellow humans. Human nature is dualistic in that it contains the capacity for both good and evil. Hypocrisy is at the core of imperialism. The line between good and evil is often blurred.

6 Imperialism When this was written, imperialism (especially British imperialism) was at its height. Imperialism occurs when a country exerts and extends their power through colonization and military force. Joseph Conrad set himself apart from his peers by exploring the negative aspects of imperialism. As you read, try and figure out the narrators opinion of imperialism. He is often ambiguous.
