2 PBIS… POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS and SUPPORTS

3 What is PBIS? A proactive systems approach Outcomes Systems Practices
Data For teachers AND students

4 PBIS is not… A canned program Limited to any specific group
One more thing

5 North County High School processed 2,457 referrals.
In 2003 – 2004… North County High School processed 2,457 referrals. 2,457 referrals = 24, min. per referral = 409 ½ hours = 68 ¼ 6 hours a day

6 Continuum of Effective Behavior
80% of students will respond to primary prevention. 15% of students will respond to secondary prevention. 5% of students will need a little more help.

7 Individual Response…Get Tough!
Increase monitoring for future problem behavior Clamp down on rule violators Re-re-re-review rules & sanctions Extend continuum of aversive consequences Improve consistency of punishments Establish the “bottom line”

8 System’s Response…Get Tougher!
Zero tolerance policies Security guards, student uniforms, metal detectors, surveillance cameras Suspension / expulsion Exclusionary options (e.g. alternative programs)

9 Reactive Responses are Predictable
When we experience aversive situations, we select interventions that produce immediate relief by… Removing students Removing ourselves Modifying the physical environment Assigning responsibility for change to student and/or others

10 Reactive Responses are Predictable
But…false sense of safety and security! Fosters environment of control Triggers & reinforces antisocial behavior Shifts accountability away from school Devalues child-adult relationship Weakens relationship between academic & social behavior programming

11 So How Do We Get Started? We take it a day at a time.
We take each day together as a TEAM. We start with today’s professional development.
