1 41st Gas-Lift Workshop Houston, Texas, USA June 3 - 7, 2019
Gas Lift Failures and Worst Practices 2019 Gas-Lift Workshop June 3 - 7, 2019

2 Agenda Introductions (15 min) Operational Issues (10 min)
Application Issues (10 min) Design Issues (10 min) Equipment Issues (10 min) Wrap-up (5 min) 2019 Gas-Lift Workshop June 3 - 7, 2019

3 Ground Rules We learn the most from our mistakes. So… What’s allowed:
Things that failed War stories Things that seemed like a good idea at the time, but… Embarrassing / humorous stories What’s not allowed: Success stories Best practices. (If it starts to sound like a best practice, we will cut you off!) Have fun!!! 2019 Gas-Lift Workshop June 3 - 7, 2019

4 Attendees Greg Stephenson – Oxy Tony Hepp – BHGE
Luis Gonzalez – Xenon Lift Solutions Corky Vickers – Encana Javier Perez – Vista O&G Lynn Rowlan – Echometer Zeke Medina – Verdun Joel Shaw – Silverwell Energy Alex Malone – BHGE 2019 Gas-Lift Workshop June 3 - 7, 2019

5 Attendees Carlos Orosco – Chevron Ganiyu Adeyemi – Chevron
Ganesh Balasubramanian – SLB Kevin Rogers – SLB Mario Ottulich – Vista O&G Juan Pitz – Pan American Energy Haidan Lu – SLB Tommy Hunt – JMI Chandran Peringod – Shell 2019 Gas-Lift Workshop June 3 - 7, 2019

6 Operational Issues High-rate Kick-off/Unloading
Eroded ports and stem (esp. top valve) RP 11V5  19G5, cf. forthcoming gas lift handbook Petrowiki – good resource Wrapping valves in plastic wrap to protect them from sand Eroding a mandrel having an empty pocket Numbering the valves By depth or according to installation sequence Upside-down mandrels 2019 Gas-Lift Workshop June 3 - 7, 2019

7 Application Issues -Tortuous wells that compel operators to complete wells with gas lift -Gas lift redesign that does not account for offset well fracturing hits -Insufficient diagnostics before changing the lift method to gas lift 2019 Gas-Lift Workshop June 3 - 7, 2019

8 Design Issues -Valves spaced too far apart
-Valves spaced too close together, e.g., the operating valve too close to the one above it -Vendor-designed completions with insufficient operator input -Designs not accounting for wells with long lateral sections -Using a conventional well gas lift design for an unconventional well -Wrong orifice size -Wrong set pressure -Relying only on valve force balance equation results instead of checking VPC data 2019 Gas-Lift Workshop June 3 - 7, 2019

9 Equipment Issues -Check valve spring rate too high or too low
-Incorrect mandrel load rating(s) leading to collapse -Incorrect valve packing for the pressure, temperature, and well fluid chemistry -Valve connections not torqued to a specification -The appropriateness of using silicone in valve bellows 2019 Gas-Lift Workshop June 3 - 7, 2019
