1 TUFMAN – Developments and future plans
Fifth Tuna Data Workshop (TDW-5) 18-22 April 2011, Noumea, New Caledonia SESSION 7 TUFMAN – Developments and future plans This is a brief presentation looking at what we might envisage a regional auditing system of tuna fishery data collection and management systems to involved (or comprise) … Oceanic Fisheries Programme (OFP) Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC)

2 TUFMAN – Current Status
TUFMAN latest version is 6.09 All TUFMAN installations upgraded to version 6 (SQL Server version) during 2010/2011 Many countries received new computer servers during the Tufman upgrade visit (purchased by SPC/FFA/GEF/self purchased) 16 Installations around the region: Cook Islands Palau Fiji Philippines FSM Solomon Islands Kiribati Tonga Indonesia Tuvalu Marshall Islands Vanuatu Nauru Vanuatu Fishing Company (NZ) Niue Vietnam

3 TUFMAN – Recent developments
Major Developments Addition of 2 new gears – Ringnet and Gillnet Artisanal data component (can be part of the main TUFMAN or as a separate application) New TUFMAN MCS module (Bryan Scott) Longline port sampling data entry fully revised (full entry including species measurements)

4 TUFMAN – Recent developments
Minor Developments Observer trip entry possible with no trip end date (i.e. the trip can be entered while it is in progress) Licenses can be entered with no license number for a status of ‘pending’ (awaiting approval) or ‘declined’. Purse seine logsheet catch can be entered for sets within international waters for non-national fleet vessels (in additional to catch within the EEZ) New buttons to update the vessels and dates of the national fleet. Add vessels from licensing Update dates using licensing dates Update ‘current’ vessels to the end of the year Bug fixes Optimisations

5 TUFMAN – Recent developments
Reports Developments New Catch and Effort report #14 Annual vessel catch for the EEZ Includes number of fishing days, number of sea days, effort, catch by major tuna species, per vessel

6 TUFMAN – Recent developments
Reports Developments Licensing reports 3 (license lists) and 5 (license summaries) revised New report parameter – ‘Active/Issued’. ‘Active’ – reports will include licenses that were current at any time during the selected report date range. ‘Issued’ – reports will include licenses whose ‘start date’ is within the selected report date range. 5a

7 TUFMAN – Future developments
Soon ‘Custom’ Reports menu This will allow reports to be developed to suit country’s individual needs, i.e. reports that are not required by other countries in the region. Not all countries will need reports in this menu. VMS data VMS data will be added as ‘VMS trips’. Using the raw VMS data, fishing trips will be identified and produced, providing a trip start date, end date, and 1 or more daily positions that will be used to match against other data and help provide coverage information, etc. VDS management module To provide a tool to help manage vessel days Automatic linking of data to other data types E.g. linking of logsheets to licenses, unloadings etc

8 TUFMAN – Future developments
Later New reporting system The way reports are done will be revised so as to make the reports easier to use but more flexible. New Mapping system A new mapping interface is planned that will no longer use MapInfo but will generate embedded maps that are interactive (i.e. you can change parameters, such as year, while viewing the map and it will change to show data for the new year). Also the possibility to add or remove data sources (for example the choice to add or remove logsheet trip tracks, VMS tracks, position reports to a map) Addition of new mapping reports that use Google Earth. Interaction with Slops Scanning software The next version of Slops will connect to the Tufman database, especially the data registry, so that you will be able to manage scans from within Tufman. Revised Data Registry system

9 TUFMAN – Future developments
Other ideas Better tools for data validation We would like to add visual validation, for example when a trip has been entered you will be able to view a map of the track to validate positions, perhaps add species composition pie charts, etc. TUFMAN Admin Tools A new tool to enable the TUFMAN administrator to view on a single page an overview of the ‘health’ of the system, e.g. what is available in terms of data, what has been added recently, what possible problems exist.

10 TUFMAN – What do you want?
Your chance to provide some immediate input to the future developments of Tufman Handout will be given to each country, with areas for comments and/or suggestions for improvement, in particular with respect to the planned new developments Also handed out is a document ‘Notes on the requirements for a VDS Management sub-system in TUFMAN’. Please review this document and provide comments as to whether this will cater for your country’s VDS needs, and provide details if it doesn’t.
