2 Understand the movement of planetary bodies.
Complex Knowledge: demonstrations of learning that go aboveand above and beyond what was explicitly taught. Knowledge: meeting the learning goals and expectations. Foundational knowledge: simpler procedures, isolated details, vocabulary. Limited knowledge: know very little details but working toward a higher level. Understand how our view of the solar system has changed over time and how discoveries made have led to our changing our view of the solar system. Learn planetary characteristics such as number of moons, size, composition, type of atmosphere, gravity, temperature and surface features. Understand the movement of planetary bodies. Understand which planetary characteristics are more important than others when it relates to our understanding of other worlds. Understand how proximity to the sun influences planets. Understand the methods and tools scientists use to learn about other planets and moons in our solar system. Understand the conditions needed for a habitable world and determine if there are habitable worlds in our solar system or outside the solar system. Understand how we look for and study solar systems other than our own.

3 Solar System Objects- right hand side
Create a t-table and fill in as you read “FYI: What is a planet” Next to your table, list the 4 other types of objects in our solar system as you read “FYI: Solar System Objects” Group 1 Names 1: (composition) 2: (location) Group 2 Names Planets 1. 2. 3. 4. Other Objects in Solar System with 1 characteristic each:

4 Please Answer the questions of the Week (from last week)
What objects make up the Solar System? [This is a question astronomers have studied for centuries.] How do scientists organize everything in our solar system?

5 Scale of the Solar System…

6 Please, Please! Play Dough Please don’t mix colors
Please make sure it all gets back into the container Smoosh everything together at the end, so next period can’t see the sizes Please make sure the cap gets put back on so it doesn’t dry out Please keep the planet strips at your desk as well

7 Modeling the Size of Planets
*complete the activity to make a scale model of the solar system for size.

8 Modeling the Size of Planets
*complete the activity to make a scale model of the solar system for size.

9 Answer these on right hand side
What is the most striking difference that you see between the 2 groups of planets? (the 2 you read about Monday) as far as relative size is concerned? Of those two groups (inner/outer or rocky/gaseous), what are two characteristics that describe the group Earth belongs to? Two characteristics that describe the group Earth doesn’t belong to? Again, in terms of relative size. Which group does Pluto seem to belong in?
