Consider the following from Sandra Cisneros's, “Tepeyac,” Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories Abuelito under a bald light bulb, under a ceiling dusty with flies, puffs his cigar and counts money soft and wrinkled as old Kleenex. In your journal, answer the following: 1. How can a ceiling be dusty with flies? Are the flies plentiful or sparse? Active or still? Clustered or evenly distributed? 2. What does Cisneros mean by a bald light bulb? What does this reveal about Abuelito’s room? Take Cisneros’s phrase, under a ceiling dusty with flies, and write a new phrase by substituting the word dusty with a different adjective. Explain to a partner the impact of your new adjective on the sentence.

2 Announcements Please be diligent about getting your assignments in on time. Also, be careful with your work. Several of you did not perform well on the CommonLit assignment because you did not read the questions carefully. Your YES! Contest essays final drafts are due by next Monday. We will spend a little time tomorrow morning talking about the prompt. This is a regular week for Membean. 30 minutes in class, 15 minutes outside of class. Be sure to finish your discussion post on Canvas by Wednesday. It will close at 11:59pm Wednesday night and you will not be able to post after that.

3 Dystopian Literature What is a utopia? What is a dystopia? How are they different? Utopia: A place, state, or condition that is ideally perfect in respect of politics, laws, customs, and conditions. Characteristics of a Utopian Society • Information, independent thought, and freedom are promoted. • A figurehead or concept brings the citizens of the society together, but not treated as singular. • Citizens are truly free to think independently. • Citizens have no fear of the outside world. • Citizens live in a harmonious state. • The natural world is embraced and revered. • Citizens embrace social and moral ideals. Individuality and innovation are welcomed. • The society evolves with change to make a perfect utopian world.

4 Dystopian Literature What is a utopia? What is a dystopia? How are they different? Dystopia: A futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, moral, or totalitarian control. Dystopias, through an exaggerated worst-case scenario, make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or political system. Characteristics of a Dystopian Society • Propaganda is used to control the citizens of society. • Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted. • A figurehead or concept is worshipped by the citizens of the society. • Citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance. • Citizens have a fear of the outside world. • Citizens live in a dehumanized state. • The natural world is banished and distrusted. • Citizens conform to uniform expectations. Individuality and dissent are bad. • The society is an illusion of a perfect utopian world.

5 Dystopian Literature Types of dystopian controls Most dystopian works present a world in which oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through one or more of the following types of controls: • Corporate control: One or more large corporations control society through products, advertising, and/or the media. Examples include Minority Report and Running Man. • Bureaucratic control: Society is controlled by a mindless bureaucracy through a tangle of red tape, relentless regulations, and incompetent government officials. Examples in film include Brazil. • Technological control: Society is controlled by technology—through computers, robots, and/or scientific means. Examples include The Matrix, The Terminator, and I, Robot. • Philosophical/religious control: Society is controlled by philosophical or religious ideology often enforced through a dictatorship or theocratic government.

6 The Dystopian Protagonist
The Dystopian Protagonist • often feels trapped and is struggling to escape. • questions the existing social and political systems. • believes or feels that something is terribly wrong with the society in which he or she lives. • helps the audience recognizes the negative aspects of the dystopian world through his or her perspective.

7 The Lottery What dystopian characteristics are present in “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson? What types of dystopian controls are present in the story? Who is/are the protagonist(s)? What characteristics of a dystopian protagonist does/do he/she/they display?

8 Homework Finish the style worksheet covering “The Lottery.” This is due TOMORROW!
