2. ELPS Why do paired maths? Experience – concrete objects, e.g. cubes
Language – using appropriate mathematical language
Pictures – moving from physical object to drawings of objects
Symbols -- +, =, -

3. How has Mathematics changed in the classroom today?
Today pupils in school are given more opportunities to:
use practical materials
play mathematical games
talk about their work (see video)
work out answers in their heads
find different ways of solving problems and puzzles…
use computers, eg to draw graphs

4. Aims To have fun with Maths
To give an opportunity for lots of practice in Mental Maths skills
To give parents an insight into the P3 Maths/Numeracy curriculum
To see Maths in an even more positive light.
To replace written homework with practical homework for 6 weeks.

5. What is involved? You borrow one game each week for six weeks
Try to play the game each night
Choose a suitable time for both/all of you
Encourage other family members to join in
Don’t be afraid to adapt the rules if you want and improvise if needed
Certificates will be given out during ROA
ENJOY YOURSELVES!

6. How can you help?
don’t tell your child that you/they find Mathematics very difficult
encourage your child to “have a go”
encourage your child to talk about how he/she works things out
don’t give the answer right away, discuss problem with child
talk to the teacher about how else you can help at home
praise and encourage your child
