2 Today’s Goal: Learn more about myths as you finish reading and analyzing “Wings,” a Greek myth re-told by Jane Yolen. Outcomes: Determine which of the “5 character traits of mythological heroes” (from Cornell Notes) are true of Daedalus. Analyze “Wings” to discover the author’s purpose for using a chorus throughout the myth. State what you think was the storyteller’s main purpose in this myth. Define “mood” in literature and identify the mood of “Wings.” Explain what “Wings” reveals about the relationship between people and the gods.

3 Starter #1: Yesterday we noted out that author Jane Yolen used an interesting technique in her retelling the story of Daedalus and Icharus. What technique did she use? In what way did Yolen use the chorus in “Wings”? That is, what do you think she was trying to accomplish? The chorus also contributes to the “mood” that the author wants to convey to the audience. In literature, what do we mean by “mood”? [This would make great Cornell Notes. Hint, hint You might want to add this to Cornell Notes #12: Mythology] Mood refers to the emotional climate or “feelings” the audience or reader has while hearing or reading a story. How would you describe the mood of “Wings”? Foreboding, a feeling that something tragic is going to happen

4 Starter #2: Open your Chromebooks and call up “Wings.”
As we finish reading “Wings,” use your detective skills to discover the following: * Which of the five characteristics of mythological heroes is true of Daedaulus? * What do you think is the author’s purpose for using the chorus lines? * What do you think is the story teller’s main purpose for this myth? * What elements contribute to the “mood” the author is conveying? * What does “Wings” reveal about the nature of the relationship between people and the gods? * What would the ancient Greeks have said if you asked them to state the theme of “Wings”? Where did we leave off yesterday? Who can summarize what we’ve read thus far?

5 Starter #3: Now that we have finished, let’s discuss . . .
As time permits, let’s discuss your thoughts and observation. Support what you express with specific evidence from the story. * Which of the five characteristics of mythological heroes is true of Daedaulus? * What do you think is the author’s purpose for using the chorus lines? * What do you think is the story teller’s main purpose for this myth? * What elements contribute to the “mood” the author is conveying? * What does “Wings” reveal about the nature of the relationship between people and the gods? * What would the ancient Greeks have said if you asked them to state the theme of “Wings”?
