NUCLEAR POWER BY ELLA CATHERINE, JACKSON, BRANDON, AND KELSEY

2 HOW IT WORKS Uranium-235 is the fuel of nuclear reactors. Fission neutrons collide with it to create energy as well as more fission neutrons. The neutrons can collide with the nuclei of other uranium-235 to to create more energy as well as more neutrons. This is called a chain reaction and makes the nuclear reactor sustainable. In a basic pressurized water reactor, the uranium is cooled off by a moderator that surrounds it. This moderator heats up usually either is water or heats up a water source. The water turns into steam and powers a turbine, which creates electricity.

4 ADVANTAGES High Power Does not produce greenhouse gases
Long Lasting Life Cycle Abundant amount of Uranium

5 DISADVANTAGES Radioactive Waste Accidents Radiation Nuclear Weapons
Cost Availability/Non-renewability

6 FORMULAS/HOW TO APPLY The minimum mass uranium-235 has to have to attract the neutrons is about 15kg for pure uranium-235. This increases to about 130kg for fuels containing 10% uranium-235. One kilogram of uranium-235 releases about 70x1012J. Q = (Δ m)cΔT
