In Atlanta, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested with 33 other protestors for sitting at a segregated lunch counter. Martin Luther was sent off to hard labor and the others were set free.

President Kennedy fought for Martin Luther to be freed from jail.

Kennedy Ultimately defeated Nixon and was elected in November of 1960
At his inauguration Kennedy famously stated “And so my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you- Ask what you can do for your country”

Kennedy’s Campaign pledges included:
Space: we will be the first to land on the moon! JFK gave money to the space program (CLIP JFK moon speech)
Economy: unemployment was at its highest since before WWII; American economy was behind the Soviets

Kennedy proposed an expansion of programs designed to help the poor
Most were not passed by Congress
JFK started the Peace Corps (volunteers who were sent to poor nations to teach & provide technical help)
JFK also proposed a manned mission to the moon
Many of JFK’s proposals were never enacted due to his tragic assassination on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas
