1 Figurative Language & Poetic Devices
Day 16

2 Goals Focus Question Today
To explore how poets and song writers use figurative language What poetics forms and devices do poets use?

3 What is Figurative Language (recap)
Language not meant to be taken literally. A way to describe an experience with words rather than the obvious description.

4 Quick Review

5 Review Common Figurative Language:
Device Definition Example Metaphor Comparison between two things when one things becomes the other thing She is a sturdy tree Simile Comparison between two things using like or as She is like a sturdy tree Onomatopoeia Sound words Boom, ka-blam! Alliteration Words that begin with the same sound/letter When will winter wither? Personification Making unhuman things act and look like humans The tree shook its arms in anger. hyperbole Over-exaggeration I am so hungry I could eat a horse!

6 FireWork Listen to Katy Perry’s song, “Firework” and annotate lyrics and complete TSP-FASTT along with the questions. Pay close attention to use of Figurative language and be sure to notate in your annotation.

7 FireWork Do you ever feel like a plastic bag Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again? Do you ever feel, feel so paper-thin Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in? Do you ever feel already buried deep Six feet under screams but no one seems to hear a thing Do you know that there's still a chance for you 'Cause there's a spark in you?

8 FireWork You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine Just own the night like the 4th of July 'Cause, baby, you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, "Ah, ah, ah" As you shoot across the sky Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colors burst You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe

9 FireWork You don't have to feel like a wasted space You're original, cannot be replaced If you only knew what the future holds After a hurricane comes a rainbow May be a reason why all the doors are closed So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road Like a lightning bolt your heart will glow And when it's time you'll know

10 FireWork Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon It's always been inside of you, you, you And now it's time to let it through, -ough, -ough

11 FireWork What is your first impression of the song? What is the mood?
What does it seem to be about? What more did you discover? What new ideas? What is the importance of the main metaphor? What is the message?

12 Assignment: : As you and your partner/table do a close reading of one of the following song lyrics, keep in mind that all writers, lyricists included, have messages they want to send out into the world, but they want us to do some of the work. They want us to read closely and pay attention to details. The more carefully we pay attention, the more the writer’s message will be revealed. Read lyrics, follow directions, and answer the questions.
