2. What is a PTA?
PTA is a local, self-governing unit. It promotes the Purposes, Mission, Policies and Bylaws of Georgia PTA and the National PTA as it plans programs and activities to meet the needs of children and youth in the community.
PTA is part of the world’s oldest, largest child advocacy organization that provides structure, materials, information, and support.

3. What is a PTA?
PTA provides parents, teachers and the community with a way to share their experience and knowledge about children.
When a PTA is organized, they automatically receive the IRS non-profit status of 501(c)(3).
PTAs are non-commercial, non-sectarian and non-partisan.
PTA speaks for everychild. onevoice.

A relevant resource for families and communities, and
A strong advocate for the education and well-being of every child.

6. Requirements for Organization
In order for a group to form at PTA, the following are required:
1. Have 25 individuals willing to join
2. Be committed to the Purposes, Mission, basic policies and guiding principles of the PTA
3. Have individuals willing to serve as officers

7. How to Move Forward
Setting up the temporary committees which will build the framework of your new Local Unit.
Temporary committees will include Bylaws, Nominating, Hospitality and Membership.

9. Bylaws Committee
This group will be given a master copy of the bylaws with some blanks that will need to be filled in to create your individual Local Unit bylaws.
Examples of information the Bylaws committee will decide on are officer positions, cost of dues, length of term of office etc…
The chairperson of this group will report the results at the charter meeting.

10. Nominating Committee
This group will be responsible for seeking out a slate of officers based on the positions created by the bylaws committee
Members of this group do not have to serve as an officer but they can if they are interested and chosen by the committee
The Chairperson of this group will present a slate of officers at the Charter meeting

11. Membership Committee
This group should plan for enrollment of all interested persons who are present at the Charter meeting.
Members will set up an area and sell membership cards during the enrollment period of the charter meeting

12. Hospitality Committee
This group is responsible for making everyone feel welcome and included.
It is a nice idea to provide light refreshments such as juice and cookies during the time we break for enrollment of members.
