4. Thought Police
Agency that detects those who are against the Party by subversive actions – committing thought crime
Thought Crime – any thought or action of intelligence against the Party; punishable by vaporizing
Doublethink – knowing something to be true but believing in its opposite at the same time
Winston knows that there was a “normal” way of life before the Party took over, but is forced to believe that the Party brought about a better way of life

Works in the Ministry of Truth; rewrites articles and other works to maintain Big Brother’s importance
Party and Big Brother should always be right, Winston rewrites the history to make this fact

Discusses rebellion – only achieved by the proles
Has a diary that is about the evils of the Party and his daily events with it
