Objectives of AMICI WP5- Industrialization: Industry for Research’s benefit With this WP we aim to sensitize and train the industrial companies in the needs, the knowledge (know-how), the techniques, the methods and the quality standards involved in the accelerator and superconducting magnet technologies developed in the Technical Infrastructures.

7 T5.1 Professional training and apprenticeship

8 What about the scopes? Promoting professional skills training and cross improvement between research laboratories and industry Training and apprenticeship in TI. Defining the conditions and setting the basis for an apprenticeship program, where professional technicians and young engineers from relevant industrial partners would be trained by hands-on fabrication, assembly or test of accelerator and magnet equipment and by exercising key techniques Training and apprenticeship in industry. The engagement in industrial R&D activities and in services to the industry aimed at innovating their products and processes would benefit from the secondments of researchers and technical personnel within the companies themselves.

What has been done After the Industry day in Padova, a working group with industry was formed (40-30, Elytt and Alsyom) and meetings were held, some times with participation of other Task (5.2 and 5.4) Survey of the practice in TI in training and apprenticeship Survey of the practice in Industry in training and apprenticeship Summarized in preliminary reports

10 Ongoing activities Since companies could not express their needs in terms of training, WP5.1 has listed the trainings that could be available to companies at TI List will be sent to companies after modification with AMICI TI inputs.

11 A relevant point: certification
Training preparation and participation certificate : To agree on which TI can teach which topic and whom. To agree on the content of the trainings (what should be tought), meetings between the relevant TI to establish the content on targeted subject (for example on CR assembly, CEA and DESY, on magnet CEA and CERN). To review periodically the content and make it evolve To attest that companies have attended and circulate the information between TI and register on a common database ? and to issue a document stamped by AMICI We do not substitute to general trainings. We should not use the term certification since we don’t have the certification status.

12 An objective still requires some effort
Training and apprenticeship in industry. The engagement in industrial R&D activities and in services to the industry aimed at innovating their products and processes would benefit from the secondments of researchers and technical personnel within the companies themselves. CEA responsibility, the final report is due by INFN. Something done: 1) Survey of training existing in industry; 2) Industry was inquired and does not seem well accepting secondments from TI, but it is possible the questions was not correctly asked. In AMICI some doubts about this activity but .. … there are examples of secondments of Academia in Industry funded with public funds. We need more examples. We think to PhD students or young researcher as making secondments in industry

13 Open questions and future perspectives How to finance the training :
Can a training be given in a country different from the trainee company country be included in the state law financing? Do european funds exist to support trainings expenses ? The next steps : Could we create a « fund » with contribution of interested companies and practice the training? Creating a consortium of infrastructures and companies in order to train/learn when contracts for next accelerators or magnets construction are issued or ….

15 As stated in the AMICI proposal:
Objectives of WP5.2 As stated in the AMICI proposal: “Establish a common knowledge, background and use among Technological Infrastructures and related laboratories and industries in relation to material and components involved in accelerator and large superconducting magnets. “ Main idea: Accelerator performances are based not only on accelerator systems design but also on material or component choice and specifications. Data and characteristics of these are not easy to find in papers and knowledge sharing is more commonly done with private communications. Even on raw materials, non-standard use in an accelerator environment (radiation, cold temperature…) add difficulties to find corresponding data. Main outcome: Create a reference database for material/component used in accelerators (accelerating structures, magnets, diagnostics, ancillaries…) and start to fill it with relevant data.

19 How AMICI Database will be working
Functional database. This has been debated. Indications for finding the best way for connecting materials to components. Some examples of structure will be implemented (This requires 5-6 months at IFJ-PAN)

28 What we are speaking about
Model: A device based on first development of conceptual ideas with a scaled approach. Tooling not (fully) available yet. After some or many models …. Prototype: An almost mature component, for final assessing and training of tools and manufacturing methods . In principle it could be used in an accelerator. After one or some prototypes … Mass Production: Mature components. No more changes applied wrt the last prototype

30 LEGAL FRAMEWORK FOR PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT WITH INDUSTRY
• Partnership for Innovation • Pre-commercial procurement (PCP) • Competitive procedure with negotiation • Competitive dialogue … all these procedures based on open selection

31 Critical Issues 1) Possible scheme for IP managing between TI and Industry On the basis of the current experience, it is commonly believed that possible schemes for managing the IP in the TI-Industry collaborative developments can be found case by case. The IP can be in general subdivided into three categories: 1) open access, 2) limited access under Non-disclosure agreements, 3) Not accessible documents. 2) Moving from prototype to mass production (maybe from models to prototype and then to mass production) some problems can arise due the limitations to lock-in included in the national laws for public contracts. Large contract protype+ series or results from R&D to be made public.

32 What could be done Better discussion about the subsidiary principle
Open problem: From prototype to mass production (avoid the “lock-in“) Open problem: Too much IP spreading Need to have a feed-back from a wider audience

33 Future Some deeper investigation of the above points Define a code of conduct to be applied in the relationships with Industry in a way to be as possible not conflicting with the European laws for public contracts
