In vitro effect of CMPs on adult DSS-treated stomach explants. The smooth continuous layer of the control stomach epithelium (A, arrow) appears as a festoon structure in the stomach of the DSS-treated animals (B, arrows). CMPs, which had no direct effect on the morphology of the epithelium (C, arrows), reduce the effects of the DSS treatment if maintained in the incubation medium; the surface of the epithelium instead remains smooth (D, arrow). Removal of the CMPs from the DSS-containing medium resulted in a phenotype comparable to that of the DSS-treated samples (E, arrows). Asterisk indicates stomach lumen. White dashed lines have been drawn to highlight the surface morphology of the epithelium, smooth or furrows characterized.
