Acid Rain By Faye and Joanna

What is Acid Rain? Acid rain is rain water that has been made acidic by certain types of air pollution such as sulpher and nitrogen dioxide.

What causes acid rain? Acid rain is caused when nitrogen and sulpher dioxide are released into the atmosphere by industrial processes

Acid rain and its effects on the environment
Acid Rain can cause health problems or even make health problems worse Can kill aquatic animals and plants Harms forests Damages lakes and streams Damages buildings, statues and objects

Precipitation of acid rain

Wet deposition When the acid chemicals get blown over areas that have wet weather, acid falls to the ground in the form of rain, snow, fog, mist, hail and sleet

Dry deposition In areas where the weather is dry, the acid chemicals mix with dust, or smoke and fall to the ground sticking to the ground, buildings, homes, cars and trees

solutions!

Burn less fossil fuels. Use more renewable sources!

Conserve energy and water

Stop cutting down trees!

Walk, cycle or carpool to school

What is being done?

Reducing pollution Scientists have found different ways to reduce the amount of sulpher dioxide released from coal burning power plants They are encouraging people to use coal with less sulpher They are also installing equipment called scrubbers which remove the sulpher dioxide from gases

Cleaner cars Cars and trucks are major sources of the pollutants that cause acid rain Manufacturers are required to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides released by new cars They are also trying to enforce new cars to use cleaner fuels such as natural gas
