1 Asleep on Delilah’s Lap
Sermon Asleep on Delilah’s Lap Judges 16 Introduction

2 WE CAN FALL ASLEEP SPIRITUALLY Falling asleep on Delilah’s Lap is a picture of the condition of the soul.

3 Colloquy on Rejoicing Remember, O My Soul, It is thy duty and privilege to rejoice in God: He requires it of thee for all his favors of grace.

4 Rejoice then in the Giver and his goodness, Be happy in him, O my heart, and in nothing but God, for whatever a man trusts in, from that he expects happiness.

5 Hast thou sought joys in some creature comfort
Hast thou sought joys in some creature comfort? Look not below God for happiness; fall not asleep in Delilah’s lap. Let God be all in all to thee, and joy in the fountain that is always full.

6 WHO OR WHAT IS DELILAH? It is that attractive thing that is out to destroy you. It is that person, behavior, activity, thing that you know is dangerous but you foolishly keep going back to.

7 WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE TO BE ASLEEP IN DELILAH’S LAP To be CLUELESS in the presence of Delilah; in a naïve way not suspecting her of posing any danger, despite real life experience that shows the need to watch out.

8 2.) Proud self-reliance – this is underneath all of it – confidence in your own strength – How many people have walked into areas that they know are dangerous but think, “It won’t happen to me.”?

9 Sleeping in Delilah’s lap happens when we take the path of compromise that leads to chaos. COMPROMISE lives by the questions or attitude... Who will know? What’s the harm?

10 How much can I get away with before it is sin
How much can I get away with before it is sin? How far can I go in that before it is sin? How will it make me look? That may be wrong for you, but …. We must determine our own truth “Whatever”

11 CHAOS…. Will it make me feel good. Can I get away with it
CHAOS….. Will it make me feel good? Can I get away with it? There is no truth so I can do what I want. You’re not the boss of me.

12 3.) Taking for granted the grace of God Our walk with God is not some formula, it is a relationship.

13 4) An unrealistic view of sin
A no “big deal” view of sin flows from a “no big deal” view of the Holiness of God.

14 5) A “lukewarm” approach to dealing with God
5) A “lukewarm” approach to dealing with God. The cult of the comfortable is the curse of the Christian.

15 HOW WE FALL ASLEEP IN DELILAH’S LAP It happens when we look below God for happiness. It happens when we are driven by something other than the glory of God – “she looks good to me”

16 DO YOU HAVE A Delilah. Negative test: What do you worry the most about
DO YOU HAVE A Delilah? Negative test: What do you worry the most about? Positive test: William Temple – “Your religion is what you do with your solitude.”

17 Delilah can take many forms: Materialist cluster A relational cluster Achievement cluster - career, sports, status A cause - political or social Hobbies- what I want to do next to develop myself.

18 Delilah won’t die for you or forgive you or give you any real meaning, but Jesus does. He was made sin so that we might be made righteous, be forgiven and accepted by the Father.

19 The anti-dote to falling asleep in Delilah’s Lap is to run to the arms of Jesus and meditate upon His perfection, His greatness, His sacrifice for you, His provision of salvation and His presence through the Holy Spirit.
