Elected by fellow MPs and is responsible for running the day to day business of the House of Commons. Think of him as ‘the referee’ who controls debate and maintains order

He performs ceremonial duties (like carrying the mace) He is responsible for the security of the House of Commons and the Parliament buildings The mace is a symbol of legislative power and is always used to open Parliament No mace = no Parliament
