2 On Friday 15th March 2019 Cyclone Idai struck Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. It is thought to be one of the largest weather-related disasters ever to hit the southern hemisphere.

3 Millions of people have been affected as the flood waters continue to surge across the region.

4 Over a quarter of a million children are living in desperate conditions.

5 Over 700 people have lost their lives.
1.7 million people across the region are affected. The local authorities are concerned that damage to the water supplies could lead to an outbreak of cholera.

6 Fr Chiedza Chimhanda SJ, the Jesuit Provincial for Zimbabwe-Mozambique says,
“The situation is critical. It will take a few days to fully understand the impact and scale of this disaster. When we do, we will do all that is possible to support our sisters and brothers in need.”

7 Compassion in Action Jesuit Missions is in touch with our Jesuit partners in Southern Africa as they assess the needs of local communities. They have the confidence of the local people and the experience to accompany them as they recover from this tragedy. Registered charity number:  (England and Wales) and Scotland (040490)

8 Compassion in Action With flood waters continuing to rise, the future for thousands of people looks bleak. Southern Africa has already been coping with a chronic food shortage for much of this year and, once again, the poorest people will be most affected. It will take many months and perhaps years for people to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.
