1 Momentum

2 Quick Video

3 Momentum Momentum can be defined as “inertia in motion."
It is moving mass All objects have mass; so if an object is moving, then it has momentum Momentum depends on two things: mass and velocity

4 Momentum Momentum = mass X velocity p = mv
where p = momentum, m = mass and v=velocity Unit for Momentum: Kgm/s

5 Which has more momentum and why?
A 1400 kg truck traveling at 50 m/s Or a 500 kg car traveling at 50 m/s

6 Which has more momentum and why?
A 1400 kg truck traveling at 10 m/s Or a 500 kg car traveling at 50 m/s

7 Which has more momentum and why?
A 1400 kg truck traveling at 0 m/s Or a 500 kg car traveling at 0 m/s

8 White board practice 1.  Calculate the momentum of a 0.15 kg ball that is moving toward home plate at a velocity of 40m/s.

9 White board practice 3.  A track athlete throws a 2kg discus into a field with a velocity of 21m/s.  What is the momentum of the discus?

10 White board practice 4.  Calculate the momentum of a 700g ball that is going 0 m/s.
