1 Disabled Women in Britain Today and their Human Rights
Dr Armineh Soorenian Promoting the social rights of persons with disabilities by building the capacity of Armenian civil society organisations to engage with the Council of Europe monitoring mechanisms: Opening Conference, September 2017

2 Health Certain health problems have a greater impact on women.
Radical changes to the National Health Service (NHS) introduced in April 2013 has had a significantly negative impact on women who rely on these services most and throughout their lifetime Disabled women face a number of obstacles in the area of health and social care, including inaccessible health centres and facilities British medical professionals’ poor attitude, particularly towards disabled women’s sexual and reproductive health, can pose a significant barrier to using the medical services.

3 Violence Against Disabled Women and Girls
Research indicates a higher incidence of domestic violence amongst disabled women compared with non-disabled women. In some cases, the police officers are said to be inadequately trained both in terms of professional and personal attitude and approach to know how to deal with disabled victims. Research also shows that a woman’s status as a witness or her evidence is accorded less respect/weight and reliability than that of a man. Stigma and stereotypes play a significant role in limiting access to justice for disabled women subjected to violence.

4 Conclusion The multiple barriers encountered by disabled women in their daily lives are exacerbated by the interplay of their identities as “disabled” and “woman”. On the whole disablism and sexism coexist simultaneously. Disabled women therefore seem to be ignored when human rights issues are discussed in today’s Britain, a situation which ought to be thoroughly challenged by all those committed to guaranteeing disabled women’s right to enjoy all human rights and complete freedoms effectively.
