Prayers for the week 28 January – 1 February 2019
Prayer theme: prayers for Christian Unity Last week was the week for Christian Unity. This year the churches of Indonesia have had a leading role in this. In Indonesia there is a great ethnic and religious diversity and need for unity among Christians as the majority in the country are Muslims. The theme is based around Deuteronomy 16:18-20, ‘Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue…’

Monday 28 January A reading from the book of Deuteronomy Appoint judges and officials for each of your tribes in every town the Lord your God is giving you, and they shall judge the people fairly. Do not pervert justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the innocent. Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the Lord your God is giving you. Pause for thought: • How would you describe justice? • Where have you recognized justice in action? • Can we have unity without justice? Dear God, Open our hearts and help us to respect the dignity of every person. Open our eyes to see the injustices that exist all around us. Open our ears to listen and learn from the experiences of people who suffer from prejudice. Open our mouths to speak out against such prejudice and injustice. Help us to commit ourselves to work for justice and peace within our school and our society. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen

Monday 28 January Week of Christian Unity Loving God, Help us to realize that you love all of us, regardless where we are from or what faith we have. We pray fro greater unity among Christians. Help us to see what we have in common and not what divides us. Amen.

Tuesday 29 January God of justice, grant me the wisdom to see right from wrong. Let my heart be guided by honesty and my lips speak truth. In times of doubt, cloak me in courage and trust. Give me the passion for unity and peace so that I may be a good news bearer for all. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Tuesday 29 January Dear God, Give us an open heart to share your love, and to embrace all who experience discrimination. Help us to grow in love beyond prejudice and injustice. Help us to respect the uniqueness of each person, so that in our diversity we may experience unity. This prayer we make in your name. Amen.

Wednesday 23 January We pray for the unity of the Church. We celebrate the rich diversity of your people. May we strive to fulfil Jesus’ prayer that we may be one and work together to live your Kingdom. We thank you for the many colours, cultures, and customs of our world. In our differences, unite us by your love. Enable us to act together respect all life and make this world a just and peaceful household for all humanity.

Wednesday 30 January Loving God, Grant us courage and confidence so that we can attempt what might seem to be impossible. Help us to make this a school community where all are welcome and we see what connects us with each other. Allow us to draw strength from others when we need it and to be generous with our companionship when we are able to help someone else. Amen

Thursday 31 January The Kingdom of God is justice and peace (Taize) Loving God, Your Kingdom is justice and peace. Help us to work together opening the gates of your Kingdom. Amen.

Thursday 31 January Proclaim the good news to all of creation, not just to my small part. Oh God, who made the world, both body and gift. Your creation groans. What have we done? Land and sea polluted, death and destruction, communities gone, families displaced. While we sit in comfort. A damaged world, a broken system. Upheld by stupidity, destruction, neglect and greed. An abuse of God’s gift, while we disconnect. Where is God’s voice, God’s rolling waves of justice? We too are God’s body, thinking beyond ourselves, seeing consequences, listening for the still small voice, swimming against the tide. Asking what shall I do?

Friday 1 February Loving God, We thank you for the world which manifests your glory, diversity and beauty. Grant us the wisdom to walk gently upon the earth and to share together your good news with all creation. Amen. Pause for thought: • Where do you see an abuse of human power, leading to destruction or neglect? • Where do you see God’s justice in the world? • Where can we make a difference?

Friday 1 February Examen Be silent and place yourself in God’s loving presence. Think about the good things that have happened this week and give thanks. Who have you left a good memory with this week? Look back over your week. Where have you felt joy and what has been difficult and challenged you? In the quiet of your heart, tell God about your experiences. Give thanks for who you are. As you look ahead, with what spirit will you enter next week? Ask God to help you.

Afternoon Prayer and Reflection
Lord Thank you for the morning, for watching over me and walking with me. May I find joy and understanding this afternoon, in all I do. Grant me the zest and the strength I need to work for you until nightfall. Amen Let us pause for a few moments in silence and remember those family members and friends who need our prayers and support today………… Let us say together the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen May the Lord bless us and keep us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life. Amen
