3 clues About Evolution Change Over Time

4 Why are these frogs different?
They all live in the tropical rainforest, but have different adaptations. Smokey jungle frog Red-eyed tree frog Strawberry dart-poison frog

5 Species A group of organisms that can mate and produce fertile offspring: Example: Not an example: Not a new species!

6 Do Species Change Over Time?
Scientists think YES! Why do they think so?

7 Do Species Change Over Time?

8 Evidence of change of time
1. Fossils: the solidified remains or imprints of once-living organisms Formed when an organism is covered in a layer of sediment. Over time, more sediment settles on top of the organism Minerals seep into the organism, replacing the organism with stone

9 Conditions for making a fossil:
Quickly separated from air. Covered but not crushed (fine sediment) Dry conditions (desert is best) Freezing quickly also works. (Mammoth) Must have hard parts. (Sea jellies and slugs don’t make good fossils.)

10 Kinds of Fossils 1. Foot prints (evidence the organism was there)
2. the actual organism – or part of it- that turned to stone 3. an imprint of the organism Others from the reading?

11 Crocodiles have been around since the dinosaurs.
Living Fossils? Horseshoe Crabs can go for a year without eating and can survive varying salinities. Crocodiles have been around since the dinosaurs.

12 Common Fossils Found in VA
What does that tell us about Virginia’s past?

13 More Evidence Organisms Change Over Time
The Fossil Record: Relative dating- the deeper the fossil, the older it is. Fossils provide a historical Sequence of life – we can See what order life existed On earth There are gaps because Conditions to fossilize are rare.

14 More Evidence Organisms Change Over Time
2. Vestigial Structures: remnants of once useful structures Human examples:

15 Change Over Time Evolution: a process where populations accumulate inherited changes over time Some scientists believe that all living organisms came from one-celled organisms.

16 Other Evidence for Evolution
Scientists compare: Embryonic Structures: the embryos of a chicken, rabbit and human are hard to tell apart in the early stages. Skeletal Structures: Bone structures are similar in many organisms. Bats, cats, dolphins and human arm bones are almost the same. DNA: The DNA of a human and chimpanzee are 98% the same, 75% same as worms, and 50% same as bananas.

17 Review for Test- Variations
What variations do you see? Do any help with survival?

18 Variations? Survival?

19 Left # 10: Insecticide Resistance
How do insects show natural selection? Why must they keep making new bug spray formulas? Overproduction- Genetic variation- Struggle to survive- Successful Reproduction- Generation Time-

20 Name the animal adaptation
beaver wallaroo Red panda Squirrel monkey hedgehog koala
