2 THE CIRCUM-HELLAS VOLCANIC PROVINCE (CHVP)
Overview Covers > 4.86 million km2 Contains the six oldest central vent volcanoes on Mars (3.8 to 3.4 Ga) Modified by aeolian and periglacial processes

3 OBJECTIVE Determine the full extent of volcanic province
Determine age of units

4 APPROACH Map the key units “crater counts” MOLA Shaded Relief
THEMIS Day IR Image

5 UNITS ANALYZED

6 AGES OF KEY UNITS Based on alogrithm of Hartmann & Neukum (2001)

7 THE CIRCUM-HELLAS VOLCANIC PROVINCE (CHVP)
Summary CHVP covers ≈ 4.86 x 106 km2 (Elysium Province ≈ 4.9 x 106 km2, Tharsis Province ≈ 2 x 107 km2) Represents the oldest “central” volcanism on Mars Includes substantial “ridged plains” volcanism Ages range from 3.4 Ga to 3.8 Ga
