1 Installation/Configuration
C. Loomis (CNRS/LAL) Planning for Grids in SA Meraka Institute, Pretoria, SA 12-13 May 2008

2 Contents Site Services YAIM Quattor Conclusions
Middleware — C. Loomis — May 2008

3 Typical Site Services Computing Element (CE) Storage Element (SE)
Interface between batch system and the grid. Supported systems: Torque/Maui, LSF, Sun Grid Engine, Condor Storage Element (SE) Interface between local storage and the grid. SRM implementation: DPM, dCache, SToRM. Shared file system behind SRM: NFS, GPFS User Interface Machine with grid client software installed. Site “BDII” Interface to the grid information system. Makes site services and state information visible on grid. Middleware — C. Loomis — May 2008

4 Extended Site Services
Workload Management System Provide local/regional metascheduler Central LFC Provide central catalog for local/regional VOs VOMS server Provide management server for local/regional VOs Middleware — C. Loomis — May 2008

5 YAIM YAIM is the official way to configure grid services.
Uses central configuration file with often-used parameters. Set of scripts to take those parameters and configure services. Package installation usually handled via YUM. Does not handle installation or management of nodes. Can be extended by writing/modifying scripts. Low learning curve. Support available: Through EGEE support outlets, including French ROC. Middleware — C. Loomis — May 2008

6 Quattor Quattor is a generic site installation, configuration, and management toolkit. Allows management of full life cycle of machines. Permits centralized, remote management of site. Toolkit not tied to grid, but can be used for grid management. Does have a significant learning curve. Support available: Quattor Working Group: Community maintained gLite configuration. ~ 25 sites using distribution LAL has leading role in group. Middleware — C. Loomis — May 2008

7 Conclusions Grid services to install/configure:
Typical: CE, SE, BDII, UI Extended: WMS, LFC, VOMS Configuration/maintenance: Two systems available: YAIM, Quattor Decision depends on needs of site. Middleware — C. Loomis — May 2008
