2 Properties of Equality
Addition Property of Equality: Adding the same number to both side of the equation produces an equivalent equation. For any real numbers a, b, and c, if a = b, then a + c = b + c x – 3 = 2 x – = Subtraction Property of Equality: Subtracting the same number to both sides of the equation produces an equivalent equation. For any real numbers a, b, and c, if a = b, then a – c = b – c x + 3 = 6 x + 3 – 3 = 6 - 3

Multiplication Property of Equality: Multipling each side of the equation by same nonzero number produces an equivalent equation. For any numbers a, b, and c, if a = b then a  c = b  c Division Property of Equality: Dividing each side of the equation by the same nonzero number produces an equivalent equation. For any numbers a, b, and c, if a = b then 3x = 12

4 Ex 1: Solve the following equations
y + 2 = b. m -8 = -14 c.

5 Ex 2: What is the solution to the following equations?
10 = 15x b z = 14 c d.

6 Ex 3: Solve 2x + 11 = b. c x = 20
