4. Receive
Jesus said …
‘Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!’ .
From the Gospel according to Matthew, Chapter 7, Verses 24 to 27

5. Engage
Jesus taught that just listening to God’s teaching without putting into action what you have learnt is like a person who builds on sand – at the first problem the house collapses.
Listen, learn and live out that learning in your life. This will help you to be strong when difficulties may happen.

What things have you learnt that helps you when difficult things happen?
Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?”
Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair.
Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student.
Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections.
Activity suggestion … Draw a wall and write on each brick things that you have learnt that help you in your everyday life.
