Solving Equations Containing Trinomials
An equation in the form … … can be solved using two methods discussed previously. Factoring Method Graphing Method
2
Review of Factoring Method to Solve Equations
Move all non-zero terms to one side of the equation and simplify. Factor the polynomial expression. Set each factor containing a variable equal to zero. Solve the resulting equations.
3
Example 1: Solve the equation Move all terms to left side Factor Set each factor to zero Solve each equation.
4
Review of Graphing Method to Solve Equations
Move all non-zero terms to one side of the equation and simplify. Put the non-zero expression into y1 on the calculator and graph. Determine the x-intercepts. The x-values of the x-intercepts are the solutions to the equation.
5
Example 2: Solve the equation Move all terms to left side Put the expression in for y1 and graph
6
The x-intercepts are located at (-3,0) …
… and (4,0) The solutions are
7
Example 3: Solve the equation Move all terms to right side since the quadratic term is positive on that side Factor Set each factor to zero Solve each equation.
