1 Phonics Screening

2 Why are the children being screened?
Children in Year 1 throughout the country will all be taking part in a phonics screening. This year our phonics screening check will be done in June (beginning the weeks of 17th June). Children in Year 2 will also take the check if they did not achieve the required result when in Year 1 or they have not taken the test before. The phonics screening check is designed to confirm whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding and blending skills to an appropriate standard.

3 What does the check consist of?
40 words that children read 1:1 with a teacher A combination of real words and psuedo-words, nonsense words or ‘alien’ words. These words contain the sounds the children have been learning in their phonics lessons.

4 The psuedo-words are shown next to an image of an alien so the children recognise it is a nonsense word and DOES need to be phonetically decoded.

5 THIS IS NOT A SPELLING TEST
What will the children be expected to do? The children are familiar with the layout of the screening. Children will be asked to ‘sound out’ a word and blend the sounds together.eg d-o-g - dog The focus of the check is to see which sounds the children know and therefore the children will be asked to read made up ‘nonsense’ words so that they can focus on the words themselves. THIS IS NOT A SPELLING TEST

6 Who will complete the screening?
The children will complete the screening one at a time in a quiet area of the school. The class teacher will conduct all of the screening checks with the children. The screening will take as much time as the child needs. There is no pressure on the child at all.
