1 The BIG contributors to our ideas about Genetics

2 Mendel Gregor Johann Mendel 1822 – 1884 An Augustinian friar Austrian
Father of modern science of Genetics. Significance of his work not discovered for 3 decades

3 Mendel’s Peas Mendel worked laboriously on peas for his studies of inheritance. He chose 7 traits: seed shape, flower color, seed coat tint, pod shape, unripe pod color, flower location, and plant height. From his studies of these traits, he proved that invisible factors (later called genes) were inherited and passed onto next generations. He coined the phrases ‘dominant’ and ‘recessive’. He established the ‘Laws of inheritance’.

4 Mendel's genetics

5 Your NoS assignment History of Genetics assignment
Many scientists have contributed to our current understanding of genetics. Choose ONE scientist and use your research skills to find out: • Basic biography – include photo (up to 5 key points) • What they discovered (up to 5 key points) • How they used their results/evidence to change views held at the time • How their work linked to work of other scientists

6 Present your findings as an A3 poster, divided into 4 sections, using the headings above.
Your work should use words that can be understood by another Year 10 student. Choice of scientist: • Irwin Chargaff • Francis Crick • Maurice Wilkins (NZ) • James Watson • Rosalind Franklin • Barbara McLintock • Oswald Avery You can choose someone not on this list, but check with me first. DUE DATE: Friday 25 August
