Save Gunther! He Can’t Swim!

Objective: Students will be able to collaboratively utilize the design process in order to solve a design challenge. Save Gunther Challenge: Gunther was out enjoying a day on the water when a rogue wave capsized his boat. Gunther managed to crawl on top of his boat, but his lifesaver is still inside the hull. Criteria: In order to save Gunther, you and your team must use the materials given to retrieve the life saver and put it around him. Constraints: You are not permitted to touch the boat (cup), lifesaver, or Gunther with your hands, and you may not cause any bodily harm to Gunther.

Objective: Students will be able to collaboratively utilize the design process in order to solve a design challenge. Brainstorm What are some possible solutions to saving Gunther before you touch the materials? You can draw a sequence chain showing what you could do You could explain how you would save Gunther in sentence form What are the paper clips to be used for?

Objective: Students will be able to collaboratively utilize the design process in order to solve a design challenge. Create (Design) Draw out your groups plan How are you going to rescue Gunther? Why are you solving the problem this way?

Test out your solution Build your tools Test your solution

Objective: Students will be able to collaboratively utilize the design process in order to solve a design challenge. Time to Learn! What’s an Engineer? (click the link) Answer the questions on the provided sheet.

Objective: Students will be able to collaboratively utilize the design process in order to solve a design challenge. Clean Up Time Clean up all waste (garbage) Return supplies to supply area Pack up your belongings Check the floor for waste Wait your instructor to verify a clean work area and to dismiss the class (the bell does not dismiss you – the instructor does once work areas are clean)

Objective: Students will be able to collaboratively utilize the design process in order to solve a design challenge. Mixing it up! IDEO – Collaborative thinking Challenge #2 Shopping Cart Project New constraints You will have 10 minutes (fastest team wins) You must work with a new group that does not include anyone from your first group.

Presentation time Assessment:
Objective: Students will be able to collaboratively utilize the design process in order to solve a design challenge. Presentation time A large part of being an engineer is being able to communicate your ideas, designs, and solutions. Ten students will be chosen to present what their groups did and why their solutions worked or didn’t work. Complete the formative assessment and hand in when completed. Assessment:
