Pollution is a concern that affects our lives every day in the air we breathe, water we drink, and land we live upon. Though we struggle to understand exact causes, resulting conditions, and ultimate consequences, man's role in that pollution is undeniable, and the longer we are without answers the worse the future looks. This situation is not unlike the one in which Oedipus finds himself in Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex. Oedipus, the King of Thebes, must save his city from a plague that is destroying the people of his city, the source of which turns out to be a direct consequence of the actions of men. Sophocles uses the motif of pollution to show how people who are too proud to accept responsibility for their actions bring tragedy on themselves and those around them.

3 1-work sample (proficient)
History has shown that no good can ever come from revenge. In Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare presents a great work of renaissance theater. Shakespeare creates a tale in which two families engage in a cycle of revenge that can only end in tragedy. Two young lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, find themselves falling in love with strangers, but they discover too late that they have fallen in love with their sworn enemies. The heartbreaking end of these lovers teaches a lesson about revenge to not only their families but also audiences for generations. Through the tragic love of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare demonstrates how the ignorant traditions and blind revenge of the past can destroy the future.
