2 Write Your Sonnet Write an original modern sonnet (geared to readers of the 21st century) Must meet the following criteria 14 lines Rhyme scheme Title (number or first line) Have a problem and solution Have a shift or Volta (usually a transition) Some figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification, enjambment, metonymy, synecdoche) One of three themes; Brevity of life Transience of beauty Trappings of desire

3 Print Your Sonnet Use color paper (letter size only) No Black paper
Watermark your paper (relevant to theme) Watermark should not interfere with text Font: Any that is easily legible Size: 18 or larger if it fits Margin: 1 inch on all sides Do not CENTER sonnets Your name and period on back in pen only

4 Sonnet Template Include a word document annotated with the following:
Rhyme scheme (last word and letter sound of all 14 lines) Title Problem/Solution Couplet (write it out) Theme (a statement of aboutness) Figurative language(short explanation) Volta (transitional statement) SEE SAMPLE ON NEXT SLIDE

6 Collaboration You may work with a partners (2 people total)
One of you can recite while the other explains (decide) Both of you should decide on all criteria Both names included on the sonnet Only work with students in your class period Memorization is not required but highly recommended Final results must be seamless

7 Rubric Grade 1: Sonnet is original/written and presented orally
Sonnet follows one of 3 themes Grade 3: Sonnet has at least one example of figurative language Grade 4: Sonnet includes a Volta Grade 5: Watermark relevance Original text

8 Rules No late assignments will be graded
If you do not present/recite your sonnet, you will NOT receive credit Incomplete projects will not be accepted Abstain from using 3-4 letter words Elevate your rhyme: longer words=easier rhyme All projects are due the day of the presentation DUE DATE: March 16, (F) & March 19, (M)
